UPDATED 10th March – Measles Outbreak Update

In light of the recent increase in measles cases, it is crucial to stay informed and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and those around you.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The best way to protect yourself from measles is to receive two doses of the measles vaccine.

Expanded Vaccine Eligibility:

Infants

  • Infants aged 6 months to 11 months are eligible to receive a first dose of measles-containing vaccine for earlier protection against measles. Typically, in Ontario, children receive their first dose of measles vaccine (MMR) at one year of age.
*Two additional doses of measles containing vaccine must be administered after 12 months of age to ensure long-lasting immunity to measles*

Children

  • A second dose of measles-containing vaccine for children can be given before the age of 4 in consultation with your healthcare provider. Typically, in Ontario, children receive a measles booster dose between the ages of four and six – preferably before starting school.
  • It is strongly recommended for under-immunized children who are in school or childcare to receive the measles vaccine.

Adults

  • Adults born before 1970 are generally considered protected against measles. Specific populations of adults born before 1970 (e.g., people who work in healthcare, members of the military) are advised to consult with their healthcare provider for measles-containing vaccine doses.
  • Adults born in 1970 or after are advised to have two doses of measles-containing vaccine.

As measles continues to pose a risk, we urge everyone to ensure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations.

Stay safe and protected!
